The construction has finally begun. The building has been documented in order to ensure that the restoration is faithful to the original building. The first step is the removal of the two chimneys weighing 2-3 tonnes each. They will be dismantled and cleaned by hand in order for the bricks to be reused in the final restoration. This process is necessary to ensure the safety of the building and the workers during the next step: lifting the building off of its foundation.
The current foundation has deteriorated immensely which has caused the building to lean. The new foundation will allow for the creation of a full, usable basement increasing the size of the building from 2800 square feet to 4200 square feet. The new foundation is the most important aspect to ensuring a long life for this building.
It is definitely exciting to see months of planning take action. It will be a long process from beginning to end. However it will definitely be rewarding to the community and all those involved. Pathways Skill Development along with London Heritage Foundation are thrilled to see this project unfold. It is thanks to the continuous support of numerous individuals and organizations that this project is possible.
